![]() The focus is on the war at hand, with economists left behind the front line. But each weapon is limited in production, making tank rushing impossible. Real War's unit production offers something new to the RTS genre, as supply crates must be flown into depots to provide resources to buy arms. ![]() Grouping units is possible, but the lack of customizable hotkeys stymies gameplay in the thick of battle. Though the HUD is innovative, selecting the key unit is frustrating due to the small pictures used. A HUD allows you to sort through air, land, or sea units with only a few clicks, while accessing build tables away from the base. Trying to bridge the gap between training simulation and RTS entertainment title, some interesting tools are used for unit control. Where are the ground-shaking explosions and bloodcurdling battle cries? Vehicles leap absurdly high into the air when hit and land without any appropriate cacophonic crash. Buildings are not very distinguishable, but the terrain is suitable, though not memorable, as a strategic challenge in defending bridges, choking the jungle clearing, and so forth.īeyond Emery's contribution, sound effects are weak, with tanks popping shots and helicopters quietly bursting into flame. Aircraft look the best, especially in flight, but infantry units are miniscule and nearly worthless in action. Real War features real weapons, though few are recognizable to the non-military eye, due in part to the mostly dated graphics which are only slightly better than those in 1995's Command & Conquer. Finally, a lack of difficulty level settings and the absence of a speed adjustment option makes the unrealistically fast movement of all units, particularly aircraft and helicopters, uncontrollable. Even more puzzling are the units that avoid returning fire when under attack, or simply allow the enemy to run past onto your base. ![]() Units wander aimlessly, often getting lost or blocked, and vehicles attack targets and then sit still rather than press the attack. Perhaps the similarity of the suicide attack which cost American lives on the U.S.S. Indeed, the first mission is to execute a suicide run with an inflatable raft that's meant to blow up a ship to create a diversion away from the main attack force. Real War, on the other hand, not only puts you in the role of an American commander struggling against the Independent Liberation Army, but also gives you a chance to work for the terrorists. Fighting terrorism on a PC isn't a new concept, as evidenced by excellent squad-based warfare titles like Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six. Television studios, moviemakers, and even videogame companies took a step back, but publisher Simon & Schuster Interactive failed to recognize the inherent pitfalls of releasing Real War just two weeks after such a traumatic event without serious consideration of the story and gameplay.Įven without the faux pas, the game is severely hampered by flaws that should have, at the very least, delayed its release. ![]() Of course, we can’t ignore Will Ferrell’s other immature goofball roles, such as in Step Brothers. Deeds is a good alternative here, as well. Speaking of Sandler, he’s one of the kings of man-child shtick, particularly in Billy Madison, which makes for a decent counterpart to Elf. If it’s the 1994 remake of Miracle on 34th Street, though, don’t follow that up with the 2002 remake of Mr. Deeds Goes to Town, only with Santa Claus in the place of a man thought crazy for being kind and generous. The original Miracle on 34th Street has surely been mistaken for a Capra film, and that’s easily forgiven because of its being a contemporary of It’s a Wonderful Life and, more so, because of how much its courtroom scenes are reminiscent of those in his Mr. Follow it with the sequel Faraway, So Close!, which might be more relevant given how it ends with its main character wanting to go back to what he was before. Later remade in America as City of Angels, this German film by Wim Wenders looks at the human/guardian angel relationship from the latter’s perspective as he wants to be human. Fortunately, there is an amazing alternative that bears enough resemblance to choose: Wings of Desire. Then there’s a dark, inverse take in Donnie Darko, but that’s a Halloween movie, if we’re boxing in holiday entertainment. Because of its numerous copycats, there are plenty of movies not set during the holidays to consider, including Under Siege, Air Force One, White House Down, Speed, and the precursor Bullet Train. The one movie on this list where you’re most likely to ignore the rule and watch January through November, Die Hard is also kind of a big blockbuster alternative to Home Alone, as well. Although home invasion thrillers that aren’t for kids are a dime a dozen, this one under Fincher’s direction is most like Home Alone in its methodic thrills, making it like a game, plus it’s got a great performance by Jodie Foster and early proof that Kristen Stewart is a talent. It’s like if Kevin’s mom returned at the end and then both of them had to continue to stave off the Wet Bandits. If you want something that’s a lot like Home Alone for grown-ups, then David Fincher’s Panic Room ought to be your go-to. If you want more kids defending their turf from baddies, there’s The Goonies, Toy Soldiers, and Attack the Block, which exchanges criminals and terrorists for alien invaders. Some parenting experts set the expectation that your baby's routine will always run like clockwork. As these developmental shifts happen, your child's schedule will shift as well. They'll also need to eat solid foods – first just once a day, but eventually several times a day. As your baby gets older, they'll need fewer daytime naps and more playtime and stimulation. It may feel like just when you've gotten into a predictable groove with your little one, it's time to change it again. Hang in there – your baby may be back on schedule shortly, or this may be a sign that you need to adjust your routine.Īdjust your baby's schedule to suit their age Babies and toddlers regularly have sleep regressions as they approach big developmental leaps. They may be hungrier than usual, need more sleep, or return to waking up several times a night. They'll nearly triple their weight and achieve some major feats like sitting up, crawling, and perhaps even walking.ĭuring periods of growth or when they're working to achieve a new milestone, don't be surprised if your baby diverges from their usual routine. Your child accomplishes so much in the first year. Expect changes during growth spurts and milestones But it's best to keep your baby's schedule as consistent as possible while they're getting used to it. Once you establish a pattern for your baby's sleeping, awake, and feeding times, changing things for an afternoon isn't likely to undo their habits. Avoid deviating from the routine with vacations, meals on the go, or outings that push naptime back. If you're encouraging your baby to follow a schedule or observing their patterns to figure out a routine that works, make this process a top priority for at least the first couple of weeks. When starting out, put your baby's schedule first And if you log your baby's naps, feedings, and active times, you can use this record to come up with a timetable for doing things. But you'll see patterns emerge over time. Learning what your baby needs when takes time and patience. But your child is the most important guide and will tell you what they need – if you learn to read their cues. Websites, books, your baby's doctor, and other parents can all help as you figure out an appropriate schedule for your baby. Helping your baby learn to tell day from night is a key first step to getting into a workable routine. ![]() Many babies mix up their days and nights until about 3 to 4 months, sleeping long stretches during the day only to perk up once the sun goes down. It's fine if feeding lulls your baby to sleep in the early months, but by 3 or 4 months you may want to try putting them down awake so they'll learn to fall asleep on their own. Keep the routine simple – for example, a warm bath, jammies, a feeding, then lights-out. ![]() ![]() ![]() The easiest way to develop a regular bedtime is to create a bedtime routine that you and your baby can depend on night after night. For the fourth quarter, analysts project revenue rose 18 per cent from a year earlier to US$1.19 billion, with profit estimated to come in at 30 cents a share, according to data complied by Bloomberg. It has mentioned the idea of subscriptions on the past two quarterly calls - but the company has historically been slow in making product decisions. The San Francisco-based company may update investors on its thinking when it reports earnings on Tuesday. “We have a really high bar for when we would ask consumers to pay for aspects of Twitter,” he said. Segal cautioned in July that Twitter was not only “very, very early” in exploring a subscription service, but also planned to be picky about how it goes forward. Still, Twitter Chief Financial Officer Ned Segal said on a call with investors last year that a subscription option of some kind would offer sales “durability,” and recurring revenue is more consistent than advertising spending. Subscriptions have always offered a tantalizing alternative to advertising, but social networks have traditionally stayed free as a way to encourage user growth and engagement, which is then subsidized with paid marketing posts. Other possible ways to generate recurring revenue include charging for the use of services like Tweetdeck or advanced user features like “undo send” or profile-customization options. At least one idea being considered is related to “tipping,” or the ability for users to pay the people they follow for exclusive content, said the people, who asked not to be named because the discussions are internal. To explore potential options outside ad sales, a number of Twitter teams are researching subscription offerings, including one using the code name “Rogue One,” according to people familiar with the effort. The company’s user base in the U.S., its most valuable market, has also started to plateau, meaning it can’t rely on simply adding users to juice revenue. At the lowest level is what Microsoft calls the base OS component-or MinWin-which is about 95 percent of the total Vista code base. Vista's componentized nature also gives Microsoft and its partners many new capabilities when creating various Windows versions. In contrast to OSes on embedded devices, which are generally created once and then never changed, desktop OSes are often upgraded and changed by end users and applications. With a componentized approach, end users, IT administrators, and PC makers will be able to easily specify which applications and services are installed with each Windows version.īecause desktop OSes have more dependencies than OSes on embedded devices, Vista's customization features aren't as fine-grained as those of Windows XP Emdedded, which literally lets device makers specify every single feature. Vista is also internally componentized, making it easier to choose exactly which applications and features will be installed.Ĭomponentization has numerous benefits compared with previous development approaches, in which each product version heaped new features on top of the existing code base. (Technically, there are actually two images: one for 32-bit versions and one for 圆4 versions.) The product key you use during installation determines which edition is installed from the image and which features are available to the user. Furthermore, Microsoft is distributing only one Vista image instead of a different image for each product edition. You can edit a Vista image live and can easily create custom install images. Vista is deployed via a file-based image - similar to an ISO or virtual hard disk file - instead of a complex directory structure of files. But if you're an IT administrator who'll need to deploy Windows Vista either now or in the future, you've got a lot to learn.
